Thousands of mostly silent demonstrators paraded through central Tokyo on Sunday in protest against the coup in Myanmar, many carrying photos of detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi in what organisers said was the largest such march in Japan to date.

More than 4,000 took part in the protest, organisers said, streaming through the downtown shopping areas of Shibuya and Omotesando with posters saying “Help us save Myanmar” and “Stop Crimes Against Humanity”. Tokyo police said they couldn’t comment on how many people attended the event.

Is this the first time you've heard about a demonstration?
It's extremely, extremely common for people to demonstrate about anything in the world in whatever country they live in. The goal is to bring awareness to people outside of the affected country.

I mean with the internet down, yes the people in Myanmar can’t see it. But this does signal to the Japanese government that their citizens don’t think this the coup is okay. And (should) motivate the Japanese government to take action on the international level against the coup (not recognizing them, etc). See the enormous money spent on lobbying for Israel in the US as an example of how this works very well.
This also signals to the people in charge of the junta that the international community won’t stand by/cares what is going on.

What? Protesting a coup? In America we just let the government tell us who is in charge and then we continue to be subjugated. We never ever ever hold out politicians to account because we don’t have the will, unity, nor courage to fight for our democracy.

I think Japan has some economic support/ties to Myanmar, likely in an attempt to support what at best a struggle to develop libertarian/capitalist ideals and build a relationship with a pseudo-democracy. I'm sure this is to influence Japanese foreign policy with the current Myanmar govt.

Its hilarious how much American exceptionalism there is in any post about a country that isn't about America. So quick to say non white man wrong. Pretending they understand foreign cultures by only knowing one fact and hearing the world genocide. Albeit genocide is horrible, the history of Myanmar is more nuanced than that. Obviously the military government is responsible for most of the things in the government even when syu kii was the leader (she was never out right leader).

While I appreciate that the people protesting felt passionate enough about the issue to take to the streets, there is currently a State Of Emergency order in effect for Tokyo. They should be at home and not gathering in a crowd.
I would hate for thousands of potential infections to result and then my office is shut down again because people are angry at something going on in another country instead of focusing on the immediate threat in our own.

Here’s why these people protest! Military in Myanmar casts a wide net with a series of late-night raids
The arrests included government ministers, election officials, senior members of the NLD, activists, civil servants such as doctors, teachers who participated in Civil Disobedience Movement and even the fortune teller! Until now, they have conducted illegal arrests of more than 220 people since coup happened.
They used 8 PM- 4AM curfew that they announced to trespass the houses, with no explanation, drag our people out one after one. They release prisoners and order them to set fire on people’s houses.
Where is the democracy where people has to protect each other from military and police even though they are supposed to protect their people?

This is fine and dandy but no one is going to initiate a retaking of Myanmar. Considering it’s their military that performed the coup that would mean essentially declaring war on them. The major superpowers are more concerned with destabilizing each other for financial gain, not some moral defense of their ideology. Myanmar has a history of an unstable/corrupt government, I just don’t see anyone sticking their neck out for them.

Wasn’t Aun Sung Suu Kyi previously criticized for the whole Rohingya genocide? Is she one of the good guys again?

She never had any power over the military who was the one carrying out thr genocide. They simply let her run civilian affairs by their own generosity (and so they could pretend to be a democracy). Now they've gotten tired of that charade

Yes and apparently so. I’m surprised to see so many people defending someone who literally participated in a genocidal government, but here we are. The military taking over might actually be worse, but it doesn’t excuse what she has either done or allowed to happen (since that is a debatable topic).

I see it now, whenever Japan is the subject people are just dying to tell everybody why it sucks. It's like they saw how much free press Japan was getting early in the 2010's about how much of a great place and how disciplined the people are, and are trying to balance it out by shoving its flaws at everyone.

To all the dumbasses thinking “why would a Japanese person protest Myanmar?”
If you READ the article it explicitly says they’re Myanmar citizens that are currently in Japan.

The intention is to make sanctions or diplomatic pressure on the country. See, for example, how exiled Black South Africans created organizations to boycott South Africa during apartheid and to pressure the western governments that supported it. In the end, after decades, it worked. The politicians in the US and the UK that supported apartheid and the corporations that did business with it had to answer all the time why they took that position, and eventually they gave up and joined the boycott and South Africa changed. The elites in South Africa saw that they were losing money maintaining that situation.
